Beatles guitarist George Harrison’s Mercedes-Benz 600 up for auction

Nicknamed “the quiet Beatle,” George Harrison not only was the lead guitarist for the iconic British band but the writer for famed songs such as Here Comes the Sun, Something, While my Guitar Gently Weeps and Taxman.

During the height of the Beatles’ success, Harrison purchased a 1967 Mercedes-Benz (W100) 600 that is now being offered at auction.

This luxury sedan was first used as a demonstrator car for Mercedes GB before being acquired by Harrison.

It remains in its original factory color scheme of white paint over a black leather interior and is powered by the original 6.3-liter M100 V8 with mechanical fuel injection connected to a 4-speed automatic transmission.

According to the auction site, Collecting Cars, this is one of just 2,190 short-wheelbase W100-generation 600s built.

“One of its most notable elements is the 150-bar hydraulic pressure system, which powers the windows, seats, sunroof, boot, and automatic doors,” the auction house says in the car’s listing. “Doing without electric motors, it enables silent operation of features.”

In March 2021, the car was subject to a £45,000 ($62,215) overhaul completed by Mercedes-Benz specialist John Haynes during which the hydraulic system was refurbished, new seals and gaskets were added to the bumpers and headlights, bolts and trims were replaced to bring the car back to correct specifications and a new gear shift was fitted.

The ad also notes the paintwork has been refreshed and the chrome restored.

Current owner and seller, businessman and entrepreneur Sukhpal Singh Ahluwalia, is quoted in the listing reflecting on his time with the car: “I’ve put a lot of heart into this car, but I’ve always known that I would need to let it go, even if I’ve grown attached to it. I have recently started to the process of returning to India, and I know it’s going to take a while to part with my collection.”

“It’s always been part of my personal plan, but it’s still an emotional process. And it doesn’t make parting with the 600 any easier. On reflection, I feel simply the custodian of an important piece of rock and roll history.”

Harrison, a notable car enthusiast, is known for owning another Mercedes-Benz 600, the stretch-limo Pullman version that he purchased from John Lennon in 1971, a 500SEL outfitted with AMG accessories, as well as a Porsche 928S and a McLaren F1.
