China’s Mars rover completes exploration tasks

China’s first exploration mission to Mars passed a new milestone on August 15, when its rover completed all exploration tasks, traveling for 90 days across the Red Planet.

The Tianwen-1 mission, consisting of an orbiter, a lander and a rover, was launched on July 23, 2020. According to the experts involved in the mission, the more than 420 gigabytes of data collected have helped them gain “a better understanding of the atmosphere on Mars.”

 

Shanghai’s largest ‘sponge park’ opens to public

Next to the world’s largest astronomy museum, Shanghai opened the city’s largest ecological “sponge park” on Monday.

The 54 hectares-large park is able to absorb, purify and discharge rainwater, acting like a giant sponge.

Cup of China figure skating event canceled due to COVID-19 curbs

The Cup of China, the third of the six events part of the Grand Prix of Figure Skating, was canceled because of the pandemic.

The event, which should have taken place from November 4 to 7 in southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality was made impossible by very limited international flights and COVID-19 restrictions, preventing the creation of a “competition bubble,” according to the International Skating Union.

The Grand Prix final is still scheduled to be held in Osaka, Japan from December 9 to 12.

 

China launches new Tianhui satellites

On Thursday morning, China launched two Tianhui II-02 satellites into orbit from Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in north China’s Shanxi Province.

The satellites will be used for scientific experiments and research, land and resources surveying and geographic surveying and mapping.

 

Baidu unveils ‘robocar’ prototype

Baidu, China’s largest search engine and one of the largest artificial intelligence and internet companies in the world, unveiled on Wednesday its first L5 self-driving “robocar” prototype.

The vehicle has no steering wheel or pedal, but features automatic gull-wing doors, a large curved screen, an intelligent console, zero-gravity seats, an all-glass roof and external sensors.

Rescue efforts under way as 19 trapped in coal mine in China’s Qinghai

A coal mine in northwest China’s Qinghai Province was flooded by mud on Saturday, leaving one miner dead and 19 others trapped. 

Two miners, including the one who passed away in the accident, were airlifted from the mine and further rescue efforts are under way.

The coal mine was ordered by the provincial mine safety administration to suspend production and rectify irregularities on August 2, according to local authorities and an investigation has been launched into the cause of the accident.

 

China’s Kunming City to host first session of COP15

The United Nations biodiversity conference COP15 has been divided into two sessions, the first of which will be held in China’s Kunming City from October 11 to 15, as announced on Wednesday.

For this first session, only participants living in Chinese mainland will be able to attend the conference’s events in person, while the second session, taking place in Kunming City in 2022, will be open to a wider audience.

Sinopharm signs with Bangladesh to jointly produce COVID-19 vaccines

Sinopharm has signed a deal with Bangladeshi company Incepta on Tuesday agreeing to co-produce millions of COVID-19 vaccines.

According to the plan, a total of 5 million vaccines should be finished and dispensed monthly in the Bangladesh capital Dhaka.

 

China and Pakistan agree closer coordination on Afghanistan

China’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi talked about tightening their cooperation in the light of the recent events in Afghanistan during a phone call on Wednesday.

According to Wang, the two neighboring countries need to strengthen their coordination and communication in order to play a constructive role in supporting Afghanistan’s stable transition and maintaining regional peace.

 

China steps up efforts to prevent unfair competition in internet sector 

China’s top market regulator drafted new rules preventing unfair competition in the country’s internet sector on Tuesday.

Under the new proposed laws, business operators will not be allowed to use data, algorithms and other technical measures to influence users’ choices or illegally capture or use other operators’ data.
