Video surveillance in dark conditions is imperative for many users, since crimes like burglary and vandalism are more likely to occur at night. It’s easy to deploy a cost-effective security solution that can provide clear images in low-light situations, thanks to innovations such as infrared (IR) and Dahua’s Night Color Technology.

White Light LEDs

Sometimes you don’t want your security system to be a secret. Cameras with white light LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) emit white light into the field of view to allow color images in dark environments. White light has the added benefits of being a visual deterrent and also providing security lighting. White light LEDs reduce light pollution and energy cost in comparison to conventional white lighting technologies. Motion-activated options are already available in consumer lines and are expected to be introduced in professional solutions soon.

Infrared LEDs

When affordability and flexibility are key, IR illumination is a cost-efficient option for night time surveillance scenes. “It’s less expensive to illuminate the same distance with IR LEDs as opposed to white light because camera sensors are very sensitive to IR illumination,” explained Steve Wilber, Training Manager at Dahua Technology USA. “You’re going to be able to see farther with IR.”

The majority of our cameras offer integrated IR illumination: IR is a near-standard feature with no additional cost. This assures that our cameras will provide clear images regardless of ambient light levels. By default, the IR LEDs will automatically turn on if needed, simplifying installation. Users have the added flexibility of altering the threshold at which the camera switches from day (color) to night (black and white). Available Intelligent IR lets select cameras detect when a subject approaches closely and adjusts the exposure so the subject isn’t overexposed.

Night Color

Updates in technology have given rise to cameras with exceptional light sensitivity: they can produce color images better than security cameras have ever been able to do before. Our Night Color cameras have high-performance image sensors that produce saturated color images long after an IR camera will have converted to a black and white image. See a side-by-side comparison here.

Night Color is ideal for color detail at night when it’s not practical to have axillary white light illumination. Covert surveillance operations also benefit from Night Color, since there are no lights — not even the faint red glow of IR LEDs — to expose the camera’s location.

Many Options

Our broad portfolio of low-light solutions lets installers and end-users choose from a variety of different options to best suit their needs. Whether a cost-efficient solution with clear black and white images, or advanced technology that enables images in color, our cameras make sure you’re not left in the dark.
