The federal and provincial governments are giving $889,000 to Brantford and the County of Brant to respond to the impacts of COVID-19.

The City of Brantford is getting $665,000 for two trail projects.

The Powerline Road Trail reconstruction includes repaving the municipal trail and installing signs and benches.

The Wayne Gretzky Parkway Trail Reconstruction involves repaving part of the trail and other upgrades, including the addition of signs, benches and garbage cans, and the planting of trees.

The County of Brant will get $234,000 for the Burford administration building retrofits. That work involves upgrading the front counter and reception area, adding automatic doors and renovating unused spaces to provide an additional work area for staff.

The county will also receive money for HVAC upgrades for seven of its facilities and buildings.

The city has a strong tradition and a long history of providing public recreation, sport and cultural opportunities to residents and visitors in a variety of spaces that encourage healthy lifestyles and make neighbourhoods more vibrant,” said Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis.

The $889,000 is a split of $711,000 from the federal government and $178,000 from the province.

David Bailey, Mayor of the County of Brant, said upgrades to the municipality’s buildings will improve energy efficiency and result in cost savings for the county.

It will create healthier buildings by improving air quality, heating and ventilation,” said Bailey.

The contributions from both the federal and provincial governments allow these important projects to proceed and assists the municipality to maintain a lower tax rate for citizens while continually working to provide and improve customer-centred services.”

The COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program is a cost-shared, application-based infrastructure funding opportunity. It includes a combined investment of $51.2 million to support infrastructure in communities and help protect the health of residents, create jobs and promote economic recovery.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all Canadians and disproportionately certain segments,” said Bardish Chagger, Minister of Diversity and Inclusion and Youth. “As we work to finish the fight against COVID-19, we will ensure residents across southwestern, midwestern and central Ontario have access to safe and inclusive municipal infrastructure.”

Through the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan, the Government of Canada is investing more than $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada’s rural and northern communities. Ontario is investing more than $10 billion in the plan.
