The Mercedes-AMG E 63S and the BMW M5 Competition have been launched in their updated avatar. Both the premium sedans step into the same segment and have very similar performance figures.

In the first half of July 2021, we witnessed the launch of the two high-performance sedans, the Mercedes-AMG E 63S and the BMW M5 Competition. Both these sedans sport mechanical and cosmetic updates over their respective predecessors. The pricing is just Rs 8 lakh apart with the E 63S being on the more premium side. The two German sedans are powered by twin-turbo V8 engines and the claimed 0-100km/hr timings are closely matched. So we pitch the two high-performance sedans alongside each other and compare their data to find out which one excels at what.

Engine

The BMW M5 Competition is powered by a 4.4-litre V8, whereas the Mercedes-AMG E 63S gets a 4.0-litre V8. The greater displacement in the M5 Competition results in higher power output over the E 63S, on the flip side, the Mercedes packs the torquier motor. There is a twin-turbo setup on offer with both the V8s.

Drivetrain

The M5 Competition and the E 63S are offered with an all-wheel-drive system from their respective manufacturers. The M5 Competition uses an eight-speed automatic transmission, whereas the E 63S gets a nine-speed multi-clutch automatic.

Cycle parts and Chassis

BMW offers goodies such as M-sport differential, M-sport exhaust and adaptive (revised) suspension – borrowed from the M8 Gran Coupe. The carbon-ceramic brakes are an optional extra. BMW also confirms that the chassis has been updated and the engineers have worked upon optimising the 50:50 weight distribution.

The Mercedes-AMG E 63S gets a restyled fascia and the engineers have reworked the aerodynamics of the car. The air intake has been optimised too. Mercedes-AMG also offers a carbon-ceramic brake setup.

Features

The feature list on the BMW includes a new 12.3-inch touchscreen system with the latest iDrive system, four-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, hands-free parking and an optional 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system. The buyers can option ventilated seats with massage function for an added price. Other features that can be optioned out are rear-seat entertainment, sunroof, and a 360-degree camera, and soft-close doors, HUD display, Silverstone, Aragon Brown and Black leather upholstery, and ambient lighting.

The Mercedes-AMG E 63S packs a head-up display, Burmester 3D surround sound system, MBUX with an interior assist, powered closing doors to name a few. There are two sets of carbon fibre packages that the company lets the buyers choose from. 

Pricing

The BMW M5 Competition is priced at Rs 1.62 crore (ex-showroom). For the price, M5 Competition buyers get enrollment into the BMW Excellence Club. The exclusive membership includes four main categories: bespoke travel, high life, grandstand, and other BMW privileges.

The Mercedes-AMG E 63S asks for Rs 1.7 crore (ex-showroom). The higher price tag brings you a newer looking sedan and power figures that are identical to its predecessor.

Audi India also retails the RS7 that rivals the two high-performance sedans. The Audi RS7 hasn’t been included in the comparison as it sports a notchback body style. But if you’re in the market for a high-performance everyday car that will also let you clock impressive lap times on the track, you should consider the Audi RS7 along with the Mercedes-AMG E 63S and BMW M5 Competition.
